The History of Graham George

The first stop watch was created by Graham. It was he who development a mercury pendulum system for manufacturing accurate clocks in very cold and very hot weather. He also made the dead-beat escapement which lead built the master clock for Greenwich Royal Observatory. The escapement invented by him is now known as the Graham Escapement and is still in use of high precision pendulum clocks. It is basically the predecessor to the Swiss anchor movement which is used worldwide in wristwatches.  Graham had quite open attitude towards his innovations and he usually used to help his fellow horologists like Julien Le Roy and John Harrison to solve their problems and he was well known as “Honest George” in the contemporary field.

George Graham learnt the trade from Henry Aske and worked for Thomas Tompion. They moved from colleagues to friends and Graham married Tompion’s niece, Elizabeth. After the death of Tompion in 1713, Graham took over their business premises. George Graham became the most important pillar of the scientific and clock making industry. In 1721, Graham was elected as the Fellow of the Royal society and he contributed papers to its scientific journal known as the Philosophical Transactions. In 1722, he became the Master of the Clockmakers. 1751 was the year when Graham left this world.
